Lady Eagles victorious

GUEYDAN -- The Lady Eagles of Vermilion Catholic made the 20 mile trip down Highway 14 on Tuesday for an afternoon matchup with the Honeybears of Gueydan. The second time these two hooked up put VC’s Janie Trahan on the hill against Gueydan’s Kobi Benoit. Trahan saw the better end of the day, finishing the contest with 7 strikeouts and an 11-1 victory.

VC got on the board early, as Brandy Broussard laced a double, in the top of the first, and scored on a throwing error. For the next three innings, VC added a run per inning behind the bats of Hilary Theriot, Karly King, Brooke Broussard, and Ashley Theall. Going into the fifth inning, VC held on to a 4-0 lead.

Gueydan was sparked by the bats of Whitney Woods and Angelle Venisat, but could not seem to get a run home. The Honeybears threatened nearly every inning, but didn’t manage to score until late in the game. Kobi Benoit pitched well, but could not seem to distract the VC hitters. In the fifth inning, the Lady Eagles added two more runs as Hannah Theriot doubled to score Charmickia Levine from second base, and Ashley Theall plated King as she slapped a single to right field. Brooke Broussard then added another RBI with a sacrifice fly to center.

In the bottom half of the inning, Gueydan pieced together two hits and a walk to load the bases. It was crunch time for Trahan, and she delivered. Trahan fanned the final batter of the inning, saving the shutout for the time being. In the sixth, Hilary Theriot, Haley Vincent, and King all added more Eagle offense. Haley Vincent, then, added another RBI in the seventh. The Lady Eagles took an 11-0 lead into the final half-inning, as Janie Trahan said goodbye to the mound for the afternoon.

The Honeybears pushed across one run in the bottom half as Kobi Benoit tried to help out her own cause by singling home a Gueydan runner. Brooke Faulk closed out the game on the mound.

Both teams continue district play this week.
