Mamou pulls upset over Panthers

The Mamou Demons showed the Panthers of Pine Prairie they are not to be over looked Tuesday. The Demons pulled out an 8-6 upset over the PPHS baseball team. Mamou improved 3-5 in district and 8-14 on the year. The loss moved the Panthers to 5-2 in district and 13-9 on the year. It was a close game with a lot of dramatic momentum swings.
Corey Guillory went to the hill for the Demons and Brandon Guillory was on the bump for the Panthers. Corey Guillory went five-and-a-half innings for Mamou before he was relieved by Kaleb Manuel. Brandon Guillory was lifted after the second inning. Jonathan Fontenot came in and went the rest of the distance.
Mamou got on the board first. Keith Manuel (2-3) singled to begin the inning and Cade Soileau reached on an error. Sal Montelaro was clipped by a pitch to load the bases. Denzel Franks laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Manuel. Corey Guillory ripped a base hit, scoring two more runs and making it a 3-0 ball game. One out later, Matt Landreneau reached base on an error, which allowed Guillory to cross the dish. The designated hitter, Kaleb Manuel (2-4, HR, 2 RBIs), came to the plate. After watching a pitch, Manuel blasted one over the left-field fence for a two-run homer.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Demons added two more runs to their lead. Cade Soileau singled with one out and Frank reached base on a fielder’s choice. Hunter Christ singled and pushed both runners across the plate.
Mamou remained in command of the game until the top of the sixth frame. In fact, before the sixth inning, only one Panther had reached base. Then, the Panthers took advantage of four errors and three hits to bring the game closer. They scored six runs, cutting their deficit to just two runs.
Bryant Firmin got the inning started with a double. Zack Blood mimicked Firmin’s hit and scored a run. Ashton Dupre got on base via an error, which allowed Blood to score. Robert Vidrine reached base on an error, putting runners at first and second with only one out. Trevor LeBlanc delivered a single to score Vidrine and Dupre. Caleb West got on base via an error, scoring LeBlanc. Marcus Veillon forced another error, scoring West and bringing the Demons within a pair of runs.
Mamou travels to Opelousas Catholic Tuesday for another District 6-2A contest. The Panthers host the Bulldogs of Ville Platte High Tuesday.
