Weapon recovered by Mamou Police Department

MAMOU - Officer Brent Zachary’s gun was located recently by a local citizen cleaning his yard.

Zachary lost the weapon when he arrived at a fight that had taken place March 18, in the 900 block of Pine Street. Detective Todd Ortis said the call stated someone had been struck with a two-by-four.

When Zachary learned the identity of the persons responsible for the two-by-four incident, he approached them. They fled on foot and Zachary gave chase, eventually being attacked in a vacant lot and stripped of his weapons by the attackers, who have since been arrested and charged. But officers were unable to locate Zachary’s firearm at that time. Zachary also was taken to Savoy Medical Center with minor injuries.

Recently, one local citizen discovered the gun in tall grass when he was doing some yard work. Ortis said the man had seen the publicity about the missing firearm, so he contacted authorities.

“I believe the publicity about the gun prompted whoever had it to dump it off,” Ortis said. “It was located about a block away from where the incident occurred.”

Since the incident, Ortis said Zachary has returned to work and is doing well.
