VP Housing Authority discussed finances, costly vehicle

The Ville Platte Housing Authority, during its regular meeting April 8, discussed the entity’s financial situation. Member David Ortego stated the housing authority’s income from operations was $20,000 less than last year. He attributed this difference to additional expenses in protective service of $20,626 compared to $3,184 last fiscal year. He added he believes the board can break even by the end of the fiscal year. He noted the main goal of the board was to provide service and protection for the residents, not to make a profit. He stated this is a small deficit and if the board breaks even, that is fine.

The board also discussed what to do with the 2001 Dodge truck currently not in use. The vehicle was taken off the road as a way to cut costs because maintenance on the vehicle was becoming costly. Executive Director Emily Woodall stated the vehicle’s need for costly repairs would lead to budget problems in the long run and wanted suggestions on what to do with the vehicle. Ortego suggested the board put the truck for sale and advertise for bids. The bids will be opened at 10 a.m. the day of the next regular meeting, with the board reserving the right to reject any and all bids received. He also agreed with member Schmelling Thomas, who stated the board should begin looking for a new vehicle. Thomas suggested the board look for a vehicle at the state surplus auction in Baton Rouge. Ortego made a motion to put the Dodge truck up for sale and begin looking for a new vehicle. Member James Berthelot then seconded the motion, which carried unanimously.

Woodall also discussed the board’s travel policy. She said that after findings from the recent audit, a new travel policy stating the board’s agreement to abide by the policy needed to be in place in the form of a resolution. The board asked to postpone voting on the item until they could read the resolution and the policy. The board will readdress this issue at the next regular meeting.

In other business, the board:

•Approved charge offs for the month of March.

•Approved the payment of monthly expenditures.

•Approved the minutes of the March 11, regular meeting.

•Approved a set meeting date for the first Tuesday of every month.

•Learned Shirley Fontenot was reappointed as president of the resident council.
