Boulet earns honors at Frog City Relays

RAYNE – For the second time in three days, Crowley High’s Steven Boulet stepped up in a big way.

On Monday, Boulet took the spot of injured Tory Carey on two of the Gents’ three relay teams Monday and helped pace the Gents to a second-place finish at Church Point’s Bear Paw Relays.

And on Wednesday, with Carey limited to one event due to a mild ankle sprain, Boulet filled in again when called on by head coach Eric Riekta.

The junior hurdle specialist not only won his two specialties - the 110-hurdles (16.04) and the 300-hurdles (41.23) – but he also filled in for Carey on the Gents’ 4 x 200 and 4 x 400-meter relay teams which also raced to victories.

Those efforts were instrumental in helping the Gents finish second (95 ½) in Rayne High’s inaugural Frog Relays, an event that included all Acadia Parish teams but Midland and 10 teams overall.

Not surprisingly, he was named the meet’s Outstanding Track Performer.

Church Point’s Jonathon Walker, who won the long jump (20-8.5) and the triple jump (42-8.5), was named the Outstanding Field Performer.

Beau Chene won the meet title in the boys’ division with 137 points. Rayne was third with 74 points followed by Notre Dame (69) and Church Point (60.5). Iota finished eighth in the 10-team field with 13 points.

While Boulet dominated, other Gents made their presence known as well. Carey was one of them.

Despite being hampered with an injury, Carey still managed to clear 6-2 in the high jump (his only event) to win the competition. Teammate Dexter Scott went 6-0 to finish second.

In other field events, Notre Dame’s Phillip LeBlanc won the javelin (162-2) and Crowley’s Malcolm Richard won the shot put (47-8).

Rayne’s Broc Menard was the only other local to place first in the running events. He won the 400-meter dash in a time of 52.62.

Beau Chene made it a clean sweep in team competition, winning the team title on the girls’ side with a total of 109 points.

Eunice was second with 92 points and was followed by Church Point (91), Rayne (69.5), Notre Dame (59), Crowley (40) and Iota (37.5). Northside Christian was tied with Oakdale for ninth with 18 points.

Northside’s Sarah Ancelet was named the Outstanding Field performer after winning the shot put (36-11) and placing second in the discus (98-3).

The Outstanding Track Performer award went to Rayne’s Krystal Chevis. Chevis won the 100-meter dash (13.06) and the 400-meter dash (1:03.94) and placed fifth in the 200 (27.87).

Rayne’s Deja King won the 800-meter run (2:39.58) while Notre Dame’s Hayle Gossen was the top finisher in the 1600-meter run (6:02.03). Iota’s Josepha Thevis posted a winning time of 52.04 in the 300-meter hurdles.

Crowley High won two of the three relay events. The team of Lavetta Chaisson, Amber Stewart, Phayla Joseph and Keianna Wilridge placed first in the 4x200 (1:49.82) and 4x400 (4:27.67). Their time in the 4x400 was nearly six minutes faster than the runnerup.

In the field events, Iota’s Kirsten Meche won the javelin (124-8); Church Point’s Mariah Louivere won the pole vault (8-0) and Notre Dame’s Ann Venable won the high jump (5-2).
