Late rally ends Lady Demons repeat bid

The Mamou Lady Demons made the trip west to DeQuincy on Friday afternoon. The Lady Tigers were looking to make another trip to Sulphur and so were the Lady Demons. However, only one time was going to get that right. After seven innings of very intense softball, it was the DHS girls who pulled the win over the MHS girls 5-1.

The two teams battled all game. Both teams missed chances to score, due to some very good defensive performances. After a scoreless five innings, the Lady Demons cracked their goose egg on the score board.

In the top of the sixth frame, Mamou’s leadoff batter, Sadie Fontenot, drew a leadoff walk. Courtney Tate laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Fontenot into scoring position. The throw off of the bunt was hard to handle, allowing Fontenot to move all the way to third base. Amanda Fontenot followed with another bunt, but the DeQuincy defense opted not to throw her out at first base. She eventually moved to second base. The Lady Demons had runners on second and third base with only one out. Cydni James was intentionally walked to load the bases. Next batter, Amelia Soileau, was hit by a pitch. The errant pitch pushed Sadie Fontenot across the plate.

With a 1-0 lead, the Lady Demons held the momentum. However, the home team was not going to die. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the leadoff batter reached base on an error and moved to second on a wild pitch. She scored on a single to tie the ball game. The fireworks continued for the Lady Tigers. They got four more runs on a pair of hits and a pair of errors.

The 5-1 lead was all DeQuincy needed to get the victory. Sadie Fontenot took the loss in the circle. She finished with seven strikeouts. She also scattered three hits and two walks. She had a great day at the plate with a double, a walk and a run scored. Sophomore Katie Landreneau was also 2-4 at the plate with a pair of singles.

Mamou Head Coach Kim Manuel was very happy with her girls’ performance not only in the game but for the entire season. “These girls have fought hard all year long,” the second-year head coach said. “They battled and battled. In seven of our 11 losses, we were in the contest the entire time. Most of them were one run ball games. We just came up a little short today. I am very proud of these girls and the job they did all season.”

The Mamou Lady Demons finished the year with a 20-11 record.
