Slemco to give scholarship

LAFAYETTE - SLEMCO has already received over 800 scholarship applications for the 2008 scholarship drawing. If you are planning to enter, send in your application as soon as possible because the deadline of May 8, is fast approaching.

As a SLEMCO member, if you, your spouse or your dependent child or legal ward will be attending a Louisiana public university this fall, you can enter the drawing.

“SLEMCO will give away 20 scholarships worth $2,000 each, by random drawing at our annual membership meeting, which will be held at the Lafayette Cajundome the morning of Saturday, June 7,” said Mary Laurent, SLEMCO’s communications manager. Sponsoring SLEMCO customers must be present to win, but the applicants themselves do not have to attend unless the sponsor is also the applicant.

Students must be at least a senior in high school to enter. Continuing college students and those going back to school to earn an undergraduate degree are also able to apply if they have a 2.0 cumulative GPA or a “C” average from their high school. Students who have entered before, but have not won, are eligible to enter, too.

Applications were mailed out in every SLEMCO bill during February, March and April. Applications can also be picked up at high school guidance offices. You can even print out an application from the SLEMCO website at www.slemco.com.

Winners must use the scholarship funds to attend a Louisiana public university this fall and during the spring of 2009 on a full-time basis while working toward an undergraduate degree. Technical colleges do not qualify for the program.

Parents can only sponsor children who are still legal dependents. Grandparents cannot sponsor their grandchildren unless they have legal guardianship of that grandchild. If a family has more than one eligible child, each child can enter the drawing but only one family member can win per year. Once a student has won a SLEMCO scholarship, he/she cannot enter the drawing again.
