Eunice’s LaCombe, Francis place fourth in regionals

LAFAYETTE – There were a couple of fourth-place finishes for Eunice High in the Class 4-A, Region II track meet held Thursday at the University of Louisiana but no Bobcat earned a berth in this week’s state championships.
Jasmine Francis threw the discus 116-3 to finish fourth and will be an alternate selection for the state meet. Francis also participated in the shot put with a regional-qualifying throw of 35-11.
Abby LaCombe also finished fourth in the girls javelin with a distance of 105-1, just missing the top three behind Northside’s Breone Carter (105-8).
Nick McCoy advanced to the finals in the boys javelin, but he could not advance to the state competition.
Other Eunice track participants made it to regionals included the girls 4x200 Relay with Carla Fontenot, Tass Prudhomme, KyJuanna Fuqua and Heather Thomas; and the girls 4x100 Relay with Martekia Sparks, Fontenot, Prudhomme and Fuqua.
The boys 4x200 Relay was run by Tyler Collins, Nick Frank, Troy Godfrey and Malcolm Darby. Darby, Frank, Collins and Tyler Traselain participated in the 4x100 relay.
Collins also ran the 100- meter dash, while Frank ran the 200 meters for the Bobcats,
Fuqua participated in the girls 200-meter dash, while Damien Collins advanced to regionals in the high jump with a qualifying leap of 5-9.
Kelsey Soileau (7-0) and Blakelynn Biessenbeger (8-0) both advanced to regionals in the girls pole vault, but neither could get past third place finisher Dani Woods from Northside at 8-6.
Thomas and Troy Godfrey participated in the girls and boys long jump respectively, but neither advanced to the state competition.
Gilbert Leger qualified for regionals with a 41-09 in the boys triple jump, but he could not match the 45-1 put up by third-place finisher Daryl Gibson from Opelousas.
In the boys discus, Bobcat Steve Sonnier rolled into regionals with a 140-09 but failed to reach third-place winner Kaylon Roberts (LaGrange) at 139-1.
