Parish tax collections improve a little

The Evangeline Parish Sales/Use Tax Commission, during its meeting Wednesday, April 23, learned its collections for the month of March were slightly better than those of February.

Administrator Mike Veillon said there was a little less red on his comparison of collections report this month. He stated Ville Platte, Mamou, Pine Prairie and Turkey Creek were all in the black for the month, as opposed to only Pine Prairie and Chataignier in the black last month.

With the slowing down of collections from the Pine Prairie Energy Center (PPEC) project, the commission has seen a lot of red on its reports, according to Veillon, but he added he was happy to see this small boost this month.

The commission also heard a report from Auditor Winston Ardoin, who gave an update on monies collected from PPEC. Ardoin said $5,788,509 have been collected from the project. Since January of this year, only $341,914 have been collected. However, he added there is approximately $86,000 of possible taxes due. He is currently waiting on paperwork to determine if those funds belong to the tax commission.

In other business, the commission:

•Learned the cost for its postage meter would increase from $132 per month to $135 per month.

•Approved Veillon’s attendance to the Tax Conference in Williamsburg, Virginia.
