Toomer resigns from AHS
Robert Toomer has resigned as head football coach and athletic director at Abbeville High.
According to Vermilion Parish Superintendent of Schools Randy Schexnayder, Toomer turned in a letter of resignation Friday. The letter was dated May 30, the last day of school. Nothing will be official until the Vermilion Parish School Board meets this Thursday, though.
Toomer could not be reached for comment.
Toomer, who came to Abbeville in July of 2006, led the Wildcats for two seasons. He finished 2-8 in ‘06, but rebounded last season to finish 5-5 last season and just missed out on a playoff birth.
Vermilion Parish School Board member Charles Campbell said he was surprised by the news.
“I talked to coach Toomer a couple of weeks ago,” said Campbell, “and he gave no indication that he was thinking of leaving.”
If Toomer’s move becomes official, it will be another loss for the football staff, with the recent departures of assistants Bill Sturgis and Marcus Clavelle.
Schexnayder said the proper steps will be taken in regards to the Abbeville High AD and head football coaching jobs once an official decision is made.
