Two NV gals head north

LEROY -- Two girls basketball players from North Vermilion High School will be representing themselves, their school, and the state of Louisiana at the U.S Junior Nationals on July 21st. Morgan Breaux and Courtney Chargois, both members of the North Vermilion basketball team, were selected to play on a basketball team at Junior Nationals.

Both Breaux and Chargois were invited to try out for the team. The try outs were held in Mississippi. There were approximately 100 girls trying out, but only 12 of them were selected to play on the Louisiana team. Much to their surprise, they were two of those twelve selected.

“I thought I played horrible,” admitted Chargois on her performance at the tryouts. “I didn’t think I was going to make it.”

Although neither girl thought they would be selected, they were. Now they will soon be off to play in Columbus, Ohio against other teams from around the United States.

“I’m excited to go,” said Breaux. “I think it will be a different type of experience playing against people from all over.”

Having two of his own players selected onto this team is something that North Vermilion coach, Rodrick Moy, knows could be a great sign of great things to come in the future with his basketball team.

“I think it is a huge honor,” stated Moy on his players traveling to play against some of the best competition in the United States. “I was excited for those kids. They worked hard and it is something they really wanted. It is also a big honor for our team to have two kids compete at the national level. It speaks volumes for the ball club we have coming back.”

Moy also looks at this as an opportunity for his players to get coached by someone else, and perhaps bring somebody back with them that they didn’t have before.

“I’m glad they will get to learn different things from different people,” explained Moy. “Everything they are getting is from me so far. Now they can broaden their knowledge of basketball and work with some good experienced people.”

Traveling to Columbus to play basketball could also benefit Chargois and Breaux past their high school playing days. Their team will be coached by a college coach, and they will play in front of many scouts. This will give each girl a greater chance at fulfilling their dream of playing at the next level.

“I think it will be better competition,” said Breaux on what she expected the experience to be like. “I think there will be a lot of college recruiters out there to see how well we do.”

“It is just an awesome opportunity to make the team,” said Chargois. “We get to be coached by a college coach and play in front of a bunch of other college coaches. It is an honor.”
