The Eunice Junior Oilers scored three runs in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie on their way to a 5-2 victory over Rayne in a District 7-East Junior American Legion Baseball game Monday night at Eunice High.
The victory improved the district record of the Junior Oilers to 2-0. Rayne fell to 1-1 in district play.
Pitching dominated the early action behind Eunice starter Zac Person and Rayne starter Dakota Broussard.
Broussard worked out of two-out, bases-loaded jams in the first and third innings, while Person worked out of a similar situation in the third. Person did not allow a hit in his three innings of work, while striking out 10 and walking two.
Jacob Fontenot relieved Person in the fourth, working two and one-third innings before he was relieved in the sixth by Tyler Fontenot.
Jacob Fontenot gave up two hits, walked two, and fanned three. He was charged with both of Rayne’s runs, although one was unearned.
Tyler Fontenot earned the save by retiring all five batters he faced. He recorded one strikeout.
Broussard suffered the loss for Rayne. He worked four and two-thirds innings, scattering seven hits and three runs. He walked one and fanned four. Austin Meche and Tyler Venable also saw mound duty for Rayne.
In the fifth, Eunice finally broke through against Broussard. Jacob Fontenot singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Fontenot.
After Trent Vidrine lined out, Alex Comeaux tripled down the right-field line to drive in the game’s first run. Person drove home Comeaux with a single, then advanced to third on an outfield error. He would score on a wild pitch to give Eunice a 3-0 lead.
Rayne responded with two runs in their sixth. Venable reached on an error, and Broussard drew a walk. Myles Pryor doubled home both runners before Tyler Fontenot entered in relief to retire the next two batters.
Eunice added to its lead in the sixth. Alex Lee reached safely on a two-base error, then stole third. He scored on Jacob Fontenot’s double. Fontenot would later score as he hustled home from second base on a ground out by Tyler Fontenot.
Pryor doubled and tripled for the only two Rayne hits.
Jacob Fontenot led Eunice with three hits, including a double.
Trent Vidrine had two hits, while Comeaux had a triple and Brodie Olivier had a double. Lee and Person had singles.
The Junior Oilers were scheduled to travel to Crowley to face Notre Dame on Wednesday. On Monday, the Junior Oilers will host St. Louis in a 6:30 p.m. start at Bobcat Field.
