Robichaux, Dischler top 5-AAA All-District squad

CROWLEY – With an abundance of young players in 2008, the Notre Dame Pioneers were picked to finish no better than third place in the District 5-AAA baseball standings.

But the youthful Pios survived a brutal early-season schedule and, instead, surprised everyone by winning seven of their eight league games and capturing the district championship over teams like Rayne and Crowley High.

On the year, the Pios went 16-13 before bowing out of postseason play in the first round to Plaquemine.

For their efforts, Tim Robichaux was named the league’s Coach of the Year while the Pios placed five players on the 5-AAA All-District team recently announced by the league coaches.

Also earning top honors was Rayne High pitcher Tony Dischler. The UL-Monroe signee was named the Most Valuable Player after posting an overall record of 7-2 with an earned run average of 1.86. He recorded 54 strikeouts and just 14 earned runs in 52 and two third innings pitched.

Dischler was also a standout at the plate, hitting .667 in district play and .500 overall with five doubles, two triples and nine home runs. He also drove in 38 runs and scored 24 times.

Joining Dischler on the mound is teammate Koy Guidry as well as Notre Dame’s Ryan Leonards and Crowley’s Jake Trahan.

Guidry also played a key role in Rayne’s success. He was 3-0 in league play and 7-1 overall with his only loss being a 1-0 eight-inning contest to E.D. White in the second round of the playoffs.

Guidry also hit .262 on the year with three doubles, one triple, one home run and 15 RBI.

Leonards went 4-2 on the year and was 3-1 in district play with an ERA of 4.83. The sophomore struck out 37 in 42 innings. He also hit .451 with 12 doubles and 19 RBI.

Trahan was Crowley’s ace, going 6-4 on the season in helping lead the Gents to another playoff appearance. The sophomore hurler struck out 53 in a little over 65 innings. He was also one of the Gents’ leading hitters, posting an average of .308 with four doubles and 13 RBI.

Notre Dame first baseman Tim Vondenstein (.255, nine RBI), Rayne second baseman Broc Menard (.423, 12 RBI), Notre Dame third baseman Bryant Gilbert (.367, 24 RBI) and Rayne shortstop Jordan Kondert (.351, 13 RBI) make up the first team infield.

The outfield consists of Crowley’s Beau Desselle (.365, 18 RBI) and Kyron Benoit (.366, 15 RBI), Notre Dame’s Ryan Roger (.260, eight RBI) and Rayne’s Boyd Beard (.386, 12 RBI).

Making the squad as utility players are Crowley’s Nick Hoffpauir (.304, four home runs, 17 RBI), Notre Dame’s Matt Savoie (.338, 23 RBI), Church Point’s Dexter Thibodeaux (.349, three home runs, 20 RBI) and Rayne’s Tyler Venable (.348, 14 RBI).

Second team pitchers are Church Point’s Seth Thibodeaux and Tyler Keowen, Rayne’s Nick Pryor and Crowley’s Taylor Bertrand.

The infield consists of Notre Dame catcher Robert Sarver, Rayne first baseman Chris Bourque, Church Point second baseman Blake Boudreaux, Northwest third baseman Jacob Robinson and Crowley shortstop Seth Beglis.

Notre Dame’s Chance Oustalet and D.J. Welter are joined in the outfield by Rayne’s Steffan Savoy and Crowley’s Tyler Dupuis.

Utility players are Church Point’s Derek Dailey and Blake Latiolas, Rayne’s Rickey Judice and Notre Dame’s Mitch Corzine.

Honorable mentions include Notre Dame’s Zack Abshire and Tyler Vondenstein, Crowley’s Chad Hoffpauir and Church Point’s Kaine Carreon.
