Northside's Ancelet captures All-State honors
CROWLEY – Despite being the league leader in nearly every offensive category in 2008, Northside’s Sarah Ancelet was snubbed for the Most Valuable Player honor when the 6-C All-District squad, as voted on by the league’s coaches, was announced last week.
However, her efforts weren’t overlooked by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Ancelet, a senior catcher, was recently named to the LSWA Class C All-State team for the third straight year and was the only player from the league to earn that honor.
The Northwestern State signee had another remarkable season in 2008, hitting for an average just over .600 with 10 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 22 runs driven in.
Ancelet helped lead the Lady Warriors to their third straight state tournament appearance where they were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Starks, 9-1.
In that game, Ancelet accounted for all of Northside’s offense, going 3-for-3 with a double and a solo home run.
In four years at Northside, Ancelet carried a career average of just over .600 with 41 doubles, 12 triples, 10 home runs and 103 runs driven in.
She has been named to the All-District and the All-Acadia Parish first team all four years, earning the MVP honors on both as a sophomore.
Calvin’s Hannah Howell (19-2) earned the Class C MVP award for the second straight season and is a five-time All-State selection.
The junior led the Lady Cougars to their second straight state title and fourth in five years. She struck out 13 and came a hit away from a perfect game in a 3-0 win over Harrisonburg in the title game.
Harrisonburg’s David Mitchell was named the Coach of the Year.
Joining Ancelet and Howell on the first team as repeat performers are Starks’ pitcher Andrea Miller, Calvin’s Kristyne Anderson and Brooke Kelley and Family Christian’s Leeanna Clabaugh.
Miller is a seven-time All-Stater, making the squad every year since she was a sixth-grader. Anderson, Kelley and Clabaugh have made the team in each of the last two years.
