Funeral services were held for Joseph Daniel Elfert Sr., 89, of Labadieville, at St. Philomena Catholic Church in Labadierville at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 30. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 31, at the Miller Cemetery in Eunice.
A native and resident of Labadieville, Mr. Elfert died Sunday, March 27, 2016. He was the principal of St. Philomena Elementary School and Basile High School.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Miller Elfert; son, Joseph Daniel Elfert Jr. MD and wife Stephanie: their children, Joseph D. Elfert III and wife Juli (great-grandchildren, Jensea, Jude, Joel, Jolie), Justin Elfert and wife Jeanne (great-grandchildren, Ava and Wesley), Samantha Elfert, Sarah Elfert; daughter, Gretchen Elfert Chaumont and husband Ronnie Chaumont: their children, Leah Kennedy and husband Shaun (great-grandchildren, Jack, Samuel, and Sophia), Jeffrey C. Chaumont and wife Jessica (great-grandchildren, Helene, Camille, and Adelle), Ronnie J. Chaumont and wife Laura (great-grandchildren, Caitlin and Lillian); daughter, Rachel Elfert Christ and husband Gerald P. Christ: their children, Anthony P. Christ (great-granddaughter, Madison Buitron), John W. Christ and wife Margaret (great-grandchildren, Adam, Kate and Eloise Christ), Rebecca J. Christ; son, David Paul Elfert and wife Mary Beth Naquin Elfert: their children, Mary Elissa Elfert Hilse and husband Trent, Mary Christina Elfert; daughter, Monica Elfert Hanley and husband Jack Hanley: their children, Larissa and Jacob; son, Thomas A. Elfert; son, Philip I. Elfert and daughters Adia and Olivia; daughter, Maria Elfert O,Neal and husband Albert D. O’Neal III: their children, Madeline Elizabeth O’Neal and Blake C. Picou (great-granddaughter, Mila Jean Picou), Albert D. O’Neal IV, Meredith Emily O’Neal; daughter, Elizabeth E. DeBerry and husband Drew DeBerry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Albert Elfert and Alice Hortense Richard Elfert; and three brothers, Emile Pierre Elfert, Charles George Elfert and Francis Joseph Elfert.
Father Vincent J. Dufresne and Father C. Todd Lloyd officiated.
Thibodaux Funeral Home of Thibodaux was in charge of arrangements.
