Pine Prairie falls hard to Church Point

CHURCH POINT – After struggling to an 0-5 start, the Church Point Bears remained undefeated in District 5-3A with a 44-7 win over Pine Prairie.
The Bears (2-5, 2-0) exploded for 24 points in the first quarter as Church Point dominated the Panthers (2-5, 0-2) until a late fourth quarter score.
Church Point scored first as Rodney Dupuis ran 29 yards and Austin Manuel’s PAT gave the Bears a 7-0 lead with 8:09 left in the period.
The Bears added two points when the ball sailed over the punter’s head for a safety with 5:59 remaining in the opening frame.
Church Point added another touchdown when Trey Babineaux scored on a two-yard run.
Breelyn Jones connected with Babineaux for the two-point conversion as the Bears moved ahead 17-0 with 4:13 left.
Babineaux scored on a two-yard run and Austin Manuel’s kick increased the Bears’ lead to 24-0 with 1:28 remaining in the first period.
The Bears continued the scoring barrage as Jones raced 84 yards on a punt return with 10:57 left in the second period.
Babineaux scored on a five-yard run at the 1:32 mark and Manuel’s PAT gave the Bears a 37-0 lead at the break.
After a scoreless third period, Pine Prairie’s Darnell Durgin scored on a 31-yard run and Jerodd Sims added the PAT to close the gap to 37-7 with 9:58 left in the game.
Church Point’s Eron Wallace scored on a 14-yard run with 1:00 left and Manuel’s kick made the final margin, 44-7.
Babineaux finished with 112 yards on eight carries and three touchdowns for the Bears, while Dupuis had 119 yards on seven carries and a score.
Pine Prairie entertains Port Barre (2-5, 0-2) who lost to Ville Platte, 28-0.
