Spartans’ season gets going

Grant Plowden could not be more pleased at the moment.

The Vermilion Spartans, the brainchild of Plowden and friend Lewis Briggs, kicked off their second season Saturday during the Southern American Football League’s King-a-ree in Lake Charles.

The Spartans played to a 0-0 tie with Saline this weekend. The team will open its regular season this Saturday against the Alexandria Red River Raiders at North Vermilion High in Leroy. The game will kickoff at 7 p.m. Tickets are $6.

“I am really excited right now,” said Plowden, who, like Briggs, plays for the Spartans.

Plowden has reason to celebrate. The Spartans are coming off of a solid inaugural season, one that featured an 8-2 regular-season record and a deep run in the playoffs. The Spartans reached the third round before losing to the eventual champion Lake Charles Riverkats.
