It was a banner year for Basile High in 2015. However, this is now 2016 and the Bearcats must now find new blood to fill the shoes of a group of seniors that set the standard for Basile football.
The Bearcats lost five starters on defense and eight starters on offense that went to the quarterfinals the last three years.
So, Basile took their fresh new look to Elton this past Wednesday afternoon for their spring game to find out who is ready to step up to the challenge in 2016.
“We have a bunch of positions to fill,” said Basile head coach Kevin Bertrand. “We came into this spring game basically looking to see who could make plays and see who was ready to play some hard-nosed football.”
Even with a 0-0 tie with the Indians, Bertrand liked what he saw in his young squad especially on defense.
“I thought our defense did an outstanding job for only practicing about eight days,” commented Bertrand. “They ran about 30 plays on first team and gained only about 50 total yards against us. I was really impressed the way that we flew to the ball and attacked.”
“There was a lot of gang tackling going on,” Bertrand continued. “We really had good angles to the football. It was good to see the aggressiveness.”
Offensively, the Bearcats struggled a bit, but that is to be expected when you are replacing a number of players.
“We moved the ball decently,” stated Bertrand. “I thought we threw the ball well. We actually threw it more today than we had in a long time. We were able to reach the red zone about 2-3 times but just could not put the ball in the end zone. We are just going to learn how to finish drives.”
Basile will get it going this summer, working out four days a week with sessions in the morning and afternoon.
