Good things come in small packages.
At least that is what the VPGSA 6U All-Stars proved last weekend in the PONY World Series held in Youngsville.
These young ladies not only competed, they played like veterans, despite the fact that this was the first year a 6U team had competed at the World Series.
The all-stars went 4-3 in the tournament and turned that into a seventh place finish out of 14 teams.
So what was the main ingredient in the making of a successful showing? According to head coach Sunny Lahaye, it was all about keeping it fun.
“I was a little hesitant about coaching an all-star team, because of their age,” said Lahaye. “But, Ville Platte was hosting sectional and we thought it would be good for them to experience all-star play. We tried to keep it upbeat for them so they would not burn out. We tried to find that balance of making sure they were ready and not making practice too tedious.”
Despite the winning record, Ville Platte started slow in their very first game, a 15-14 loss to Harlingen, Texas.
However, Ville Platte corrected their course in the next two contests, defeating Balcones, Texas 20-15 and Manchaca, Texas 16-15.
As Ville Platte entered bracket play, it was clear that the players had a handle on the atmosphere that usually accompanies a World Series event, a they took down the host team Youngsville 16-9.
Ville Platte had to weather out thunderstorms and lightning delays before their next contest some six hours later. In that game, Ville Platte fell to the CAYL Futures 20-12.
That put Ville Platte in the loser’s bracket, but that did not deter the all-stars as they beat 15-6. Unfortunately, Ville Platte could not sustain any momentum and fell to the WYSA All-Stars 18-16, sending them back home.
“This was a great experience for myself and the players,” stated Bergeron. “But, it would not have been possible without the help of the parents, the fans and my great assistant coaches Dr. Brandon Fontenot, Jason Soileau, Nick Veillon and Brett Doucet. Like they say it takes a village to raise a child. Well it took all of these people to raise a team.”
