It was a valiant effort from the Ville Platte Dixie Youth Super 10 All-stars at the district tournament held in Oberlin this past weekend. But that effort unfortunately fell one game short.
Ville Platte, after suffering a prior loss to Mamou in the tournament, had to come through the loser’s bracket and needed two wins over that same Mamou team to claim the district title.
The boys in blue took to the field on Tuesday and defeated Mamou 3-1 to create an if necessary game. But, Mamou found their way to victory and defeated Ville Platte 5-3 in the title game on Wednesday.
“Our players did not give up when we lost that first game to Mamou earlier in the tournament,” said Ville Platte head coach John Pitre. “They are definitely fighters and proved to everyone that they do not give up until the umpire says ball game.”
Ville Platte started the tournament in with a big 13-5 win over Oakdale. The all-stars scored eight runs in the first inning in that win.
Ville Platte followed that win with another resounding victory. This time the all-stars pounded Sulphur 14-1 to start the tournament 2-0.
The next game threw Ville Platte into the loser’s bracket, as they fell to Mamou 5-3.
Ville Platte rebounded against DeQuincy in game four. The all-stars pounded the baseball in a 16-6 run-rule win over the Beauregard Parish ball club.
The very next game Ville Platte met Mamou for the second time in the tournament and needed the win to stay alive. A stellar pitching performance from Hayden Droddy and timely hitting gave Ville Platte the 3-1 win, forcing a final game.
The championship game was close, but Ville Platte could not come up with the timeley hits and fell to Mamou 5-3.
Ville Platte now advances to the regional tournament to be held in Morgan City beginning on July 15.
“We have some things to work on,” said Pitre. “I think we need to tweak some things defensively and we now have a good idea about our pitching rotation. We are also going to have to come up with the timely hits if we expect to compete at regionals.”
