When you consider it is the first year that the Ville Platte Girl’s Softball Association has fielded a six and under all-star team, taking home a sectional championship is a huge accomplishment.
According to head coach Sunny Lahaye, the biggest part of getting these young ladies ready to play in all-star competition is to keep the game fun.
“With girls this age, you have to keep them interested in the game and keep it from getting too boring,” said Lahaye. “So, we do things like coming up with new dugout cheers and changing the routine at practice, so that they continue to learn the game of softball. My hope is to give them a good foundation after the season is over.”
With that said Lahaye is grateful for the work ethic of the girls and the help of the parents and fans.
“We really have a good group of players,” stated Lahaye. “We don’t hit the ball the hardest or run the fastest, but we play hard every game. And, we have a huge amount of family support. That is so important to this age group.”
Still, these young ladies proved their worth this past weekend, going undefeated in the sectional tournament.
Ville Platte took game one against Moss Bluff 16-12 and scored a 15-9 win over Opelousas in game two.
The last two games both came against Moss Bluff. Ville Platte defeated the Calcasieu Parish team 13-11 to reach the championship game and overcame Moss Bluff 16-15 for the title.
Ville Platte will now participate in the regional tournament which will be held starting this Friday in Crowley.
