Standoff ends quietly

TURKEY CREEK - A standoff Monday evening, April 21, ended with no injuries, according to Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Captain Keith Dupre, chief of detectives.

Dupre said Turkey Creek Chief Dale Marcantel contacted the department for help and received assistance from the sheriff’s office, as well as the Pine Prairie Police Department.

Corbette Lindsay Leyser, 46, 1371 Pine Street, Turkey Creek, who had weapons, barricaded himself inside a residence. His mother was able to get out of the residence before officers arrived. They did hear gunfire, but it was not directed at the officers.

After a standoff that began at approximately 10 p.m. and ended around 2 a.m., officers took Leyser into police custody without incident. He was charged with illegal possession of a firearm. His bond was set at $100,000.

Dupre said everything ended well due to everyone working together. “We were pleased no one was hurt,” he said. Dupre commended everyone on a job well done. He said law enforcement also received assistance from Cleco and Acadian Ambulance, which stood by, in case they were needed.
