Titles up for grabs

By the end of the day several athletes from Vermilion Parish could be celebrating state titles.

At 2 p.m. the first events will begin for the Class 1A Outdoor State track meet at Bernie Moore Stadium at LSU.

Vermilion Catholic’s Karley King will go for her third title in the pole vault. The junior placed first in last week’s Region III when she cleared 12-3.

Vermilion Catholic will look to double up the pole vault as Adam Desormeaux, Region III champ with a jump of 12-2, will try to improve on last year’s second place at state. Also looking for pole vault titles will be Delcambre’s Chris Esponge, who placed second in regionals with 11-10 and Taylor Romero (11-6 for third place).

Delcambre’s Kaitlin Grossie will look to repeat as state champion of the 800-meter run. She clocked in at 2:28.35 last week to place first in regionals. Grossie also placed first in the javelin with a throw of 114-02, just ahead of teammate Linzy Landry (108-10).

Grossie will also take part in two of the Lady Panthers’ relay teams. She will join Heather Broussard, Brooke Granger and Maci Terrebonne in running the 4x200 and 4x400 relays.

Terrebonne will go after a title in the 3200 after finishing second in regionals with a time of 12:46.53.

Vermilion Catholic will also take part in the relay events with the sister act of Brandy and Brooke Broussard and Hannah and Hilary Theriot. The four runners placed second in regionals with a 51.96 in the 4x100.

Delcambre’s team of Tren and Trey LeBlanc, Damon Ladnier and Jorey Renard will look to take first in the 4x400. Ladnier and Renard will join Deon Jones and Tyler Hotard in the 4x200.

Hotard and Ladnier will look for individual success, too. Ladnier, a winner in the 800 last week (2:05.64) will try to keep his momentum today. Hotard will also compete in the triple jump after placing third last week with a 41-04.

Delcambre’s Brandon Taylor, who will compete in the 110-meter hurdles and the Panthers’ Justin Bernard in the discus round out area competitors.
