The All-District 6-2A girls basketball team was selected just before the post-season began. With all four Class 2A Evangeline Parish teams participating, it was a safe bet there would be plenty of representation on the 2008 team.

Pine Prairie High School won the district and advanced to the second round of the playoffs. Ville Platte High School was the runner-up after some very tough battles with the Lady Panthers of PPHS. Mamou had a season loaded with ups and downs, but managed to make the playoffs. The Lady Demons also unseated Ville Platte High in the Evangeline Parish Tournament earlier in the year.

Pine Prairie’s Chelsea West was selected as the Most Valuable Player in District 6-2A. She averaged over 23 points per game along with four assists. On defense, West was an animal. On average, she pulled down eight rebounds and had five steals per game. She was a huge factor in her team taking the district championship.

Pine Prairie Head Coach Craig Whittington was in just his third year as the school’s head coach. His guidance and attention helped the young ladies of PPHS be successful and set records at the school. Whittington’s team was one the only PPHS teams to make the playoffs and win district. He was an easy selection for Coach of the Year in District 6-2A.

Joining West on the first team is Mamou’s Sadie Fontenot. The senior transfer student had a huge impact on her team. She averaged 14 points per game and six rebounds. Fontenot’s presence on the court helped make her and her teammates very effective. Ville Platte High senior Bralonica Doucet was named to the first team. She put up 12 points per game and was a very good all around player. She averaged three rebounds a game and two steals.

The All-District 6-2A second team begins with Ville Platte High’s Rhonda Frank. Frank put up 15 points per night and was similar to Doucet with steals, rebounds and assists. Frank continued to be an asset all year long.

Fellow Lady Bulldog Deagenee Thomas was big under the boards all season long. She led the Lady Bulldogs with an amazing average of 14 rebounds per game. Her size and strength made her one of the toughest centers in the district. She became an unmovable force under the bucket. Sacred Heart senior Lauren Parrott averaged 14 points per game for the Lady Trojans. She was looked at as a leader on a team full of youth. She pulled down 10 rebounds per game and had a two-steals-per-game average.

Seven girls from Evangeline Parish made the All-Defensive team in District 6-2A. Sacred Heart’s Sarah Fontenot was the lone Lady Trojan. Pine Prairie placed three players on the AD team. Kayla Johnson, Aprielle Milton and Shainee Fontenot were each selected to represent the district champions on the All-Defensive team. Ville Platte placed Falonda Jack and Heidi Smith on the AD team. Mamou’s lone representative was Shakiya Gauthier.

Eight girls from Evangeline Parish received honorable mentions. From Sacred Heart, Samantha Davenport, Kinzey Franks and Elizabeth Ardoin received recognition. Mamou also had a trio receiving honorable mention. Mia Melvin, Courtney Tate and Hailey Mouiller were the lucky Lady Demons.

Chelsey Rider was the lone Lady Panther to get an HM. Ville Platte’s Dashea Arvie was the only Lady Bulldog that received an HM.

Congratulations go out to all female basketball players from Evangeline Parish that received some sort of recognition on the All-District 6-2A basketball team.
