Johnston earns top honors on 6C All-District squad
CROWLEY – Mandy Johnston was clutch all season long for the Northside Christian Lady Warriors’ softball team.
Whether it be at the plate, where she hit .350 with two home runs and drove in six runs, or on the mound where she struck out 106 batters, the junior standout rarely disappointed.
For her efforts, Johnston was recently named the Most Valuable Player on the 6C All-District team as chosen by league coaches.
Johnston proved her worth in the Lady Warriors Class C regional playoff game against Family Christian.
She struck out 11 batters in the contest while also going 3-for-5 at the plate. Johnston’s final hit, a game-winning bases loaded single in the bottom of the seventh, capped a five-run inning which propelled the Lady Warriors to the state tournament for the third straight year.
Joining Johnson on the first team is her batterymate and last year’s District MVP, Sarah Ancelet.
The Northwestern State signee had another phenomenal year, hitting over .600 with 10 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 22 RBI in 80 plate appearances.
She accounted for Northside’s only hits and run in its 9-1 quarterfinal loss to Starks. Ancelet was 3-for-3 with a solo home run and a double in the contest.
Lynsey Reed also made the team in the infield. The junior shortstop finished the year with a batting average of .250 with three doubles and six RBI.
Rounding out the infield honors are Assembly Christian first baseman Chelsae Bobbit and third baseman Bannae Madison and Bethel second baseman Brittany Viney.
Earning first team honors in the outfield are Northside’s Sarah Sonnier and Brandy Carrier along with Bethel Christian’s Brittany Presnull and Katelynn Arthur.
Sonnier, the Lady Warriors’ sophomore center fielder, hit .118 with two homers and seven RBI while Carrier, an eighth grader, hit .151 with one homer and five RBI.
Northside’s Ashley Abshire earned a spot on the team as a utility player. The first baseman finished her senior campaign with a batting average of .283. She drove in eight runs.
Northside’s Whitney Duhon and Caitlin Clayton made the team’s honorable mention list.
