L.A.H.S. holds second annual ‘Bayou Bash’

Lake Arthur High School held its second annual Bayou Bash in the school gym this past Wednesday afternoon, April 29, 2009, teaching its students just about everything about the Cajun way of life.

“The school believes that the Cajun French heritage is what makes it unique in this area of the country,” Librarian Vicki Broussard stressed. “This culture is a way of life that is passed on from generation to generation through its music, dancing, food, arts and crafts, and folklore. We at Lake Arthur High School are intent on preserving this heritage by teaching our students about these traditions with the Bayou Bash,” Broussard concluded.

Eighth grade students presented a Powerpoint presentation to showcase what they learned about the Cajun culture in their studies this year. They wore Mardi Gras masks, listened to stories told from local Cajuns (Judy Dronet), and danced to the music of Glenn Dugas and the Backdoor Band during the event.

They were also treated to cracklins made by Curley Cormier and gumbo made by some of the areas finest cooks while they partook in the festivities.

A live baby alligator was also there for students to hold with close supervision by wildlife workers.
