’Dogs open 6-3A with wins; SM falls to OHS

The Cecilia Bulldogs opened their District 6-3A campaign last week with wins over Kaplan and Erath to improve to 13-10 overall.

In District 5-4A, St. Martinville’s Tigers (17-11, 3-2) dropped a key league game at home to Opelousas while Breaux Bridge (6-14, 2-3) posted its first two district wins, stopping Beau Chene and Teurlings Catholic.

Kaplan – After a slow start, the Bulldogs got cranking in the second stanza to build a 26-17 halftime lead and never looked back in an easy win over the Pirates on Jan. 15.

Four Bulldogs finished in the double figures, with Kendrick Jeffery’s 16-point effort leading the way.

Cecilia 86, Erath 47

Cecilia – Coach Marty Lewis’ squad took control early in breezing to another district win last Friday at home.;

Six Bulldogs broke into the double figures in the high scoring contest, with Jeffery again finishing with 16 points. Larry Frederick was close behind with 14, Marcus Wiltz had 13, Dexter Miller finished with 12, and Donovan Williams and Arielle Alex contributed 11 apiece.

BBHS 52, Beau Chene 48

Breaux Bridge – After getting off to an 0-3 start in district play, the Tigers finally got things turned around last Tuesday, edging Beau Chene 52-48.

Things looked pretty bleak for The Bridge when the third period ended and they trailed the Gators, 40-29. But BB poured in 23 points during a torrid final stanza while holding Beau Chene to eight for the victory.

Lance Derouselle, Dervin Williams and Divine Alexander paced the Tigers with 15, 12 and 11 points, respectively.

BBHS 61, Teurlings 57

Lafayette – The Tigers got almost half of their points from the free throw line as they edged rival Teurlings in cage battle Friday evening.

BB hit 24 of its 33 free throw attempts for a very respectable 73% efficiency rating while the Rebels connected on only 12 of their 25 shots from the charity line.

Steven Cormier had the hot hand for The Bridge, finishing with 22 points. Derouselle and Dervin Williams added 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Opelousas 60, SMSH 58

St. Martinville – The Tigers suffered their second loss in the tough District 5-4A campaign on Jan. 15.

Although SM trailed for much of the contest, the Tigers managed to knot the score at 58-all with under a minute remaining.

The Tigers controlled the rebound after an Opelousas shot but a travelling call gave the ball to the visitors. OHS got a bucket with 14 seconds showing and SM’s final two attempts both missed the mark and the St. Landry Tigers held on for the win.

Terence Bonhomme led all scorers with 21 points, including three treys. Tajerin Butler was SM’s only other double figure scorer with 12.

SMSH 71, VCHS 49

Abbeville – The ’Ville had an easier time of it in a non-district game on Friday.

Although SM was clinging to a slim 24-23 halftime lead, the Tigers took control in the second half to win going away.

The Tigers outscored VC 22-15 and 25-11 in the third and fourth periods to break the game open.

Cordel Phillip and Terence Bonhomme accounted for more than half of SM’s total, with Philip canning 22 and Bonhomme connected for 20 points.

Next Up

Breaux Bridge gets another shot at rival St. Martinville this Friday. But The Bridge must travel to The ’Ville and will have to play better to erase the memory of SM’s 58-49 victory in their first round meeting.

Cecilia will be at home, hosting North Vermilion in 6-3A action.

Next Tuesday, Jan. 29, will see all three parish teams on the road, with St. Martinville visiting Teurlings Catholic, Breaux Bridge at Opelousas and Cecilia in New Iberia against Catholic High.
