Heritage Manor News: Happy Grandparent’s Day!

Happy Grandparents Day to all from the staff and residents of Heritage Manor. In 1970, a housewife from West Virginia initiated a campaign to set aside a special day for grandparents. Marian McQuade was a mother of 15 and had 40 grandchildren. Her primary motivation was toward the elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to get wisdom from their grandparents. Wisdom that only they could provide. The first Grandparents Day celebration was held in 1973. The proclamation for the special day was signed by West Virginia Governor Arch Moore. In 1978, five years after its beginning, the U.S. Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. This legislation was signed by President Jimmy Carter. Remember to all or visit your grandparents today.
