Heritage Manor News: Infectious diseases

Infectious diseases are disorders caused by organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. Many organisms live in and on our bodies. They are normally harmless and even sometimes helpful, but under certain conditions, they may cause disease. Some infectious disorders can be passed from person to person. Some are transmitted by bites from insects or animals. Others are acquired by ingesting contaminated food or water. Signs and symptoms of these diseases vary according to what caused the infection, but often include fever and fatigue. Mild complaints may result in rest and home remedies, while some life threatening infections may require hospitalization. Older adults are at increased risk for many reasons. As people age, there is a decline of the immune system. Respiratory infections are the fourth leading cause of death in the elderly, such as pneumonia. Other common infections seen in the elderly are urinary tract infections, herpes, skin and gastrointestinal infections.
