The 2016 football season did not turn out the way most of the parish teams imagined.
However, for two of those teams, playoffs were the order of the day, as the Sacred Heart Trojans and the Basile Bearcats both made appearances in the post-season.
With the success of the teams, individual honors usually follow and this year is no exception, as all of the parish gridiron teams had players that garnered all-district selections.
The Sacred Heart Trojans played in one of the toughest districts in the state of Louisiana, but managed to seal a playoff game for the first time in three years.
With the likes of Notre Dame, Catholic of New Iberia and Loreauville in the district, it is very tough to get any player named to the all-district team. However, the Trojans were fortunate enough to pick up eight nominations.
Making the first team for Sacred Heart was sophomore Nick Perry, as he claimed the defensive flex position. Perry had 43 tackles, two sacks, one fumble recovery and brought back an interception for a touchdown.
Earning second team honors for the Trojans was JT Harper. The sophomore running back/wide receiver earned the position of offensive athlete. Harper had 841 yards of rushing and 424 yards of receiving all while scoring 17 total touchdowns.
All earning second team status was senior punter Daniel Scully.
Honorable Mention positions went to Wesley Launey, Ellis LaHaye, Alec Gotro, Kane Deshotel and Scully.
The Basile Bearcats finished the year with an overall record of 3-8, a far cry from their previous four seasons.
Still, the Bearcats did get into the Class 1A playoffs, losing to Lincoln Prep 41-12 in the first round.
Despite the disappointing season, the Bearcats did acquire some all-district spots for a few of their players.
First team honors went to tight end Lyndon Berwick, running back Jared Belle, and wide receiver Rashawn Murphy.
Berwick hauled down nine catches for 61 yards and two touchdowns, while Belle rushed for 806 yards and nine touchdowns.
Murphy, a senior, caught 19 passes for 324 yards and nine touchdowns.
Making the first team defense was Berwick, and Belle. Berwick had 114 tackles and two sacks as a linebacker and Belle collected 52 tackles and one interception as a defensive back.
Making the second team were Gage Johnson on offense and Darren Chaumont, Logan David and Andre Reed on defense. Belle was a second team selection as a kick returner.
Ville Platte High completed their season at 5-5 and failed to make the playoffs, after competing in a tough district in their own right.
The Bulldogs had several players named to the first and second all-district teams for District 5-3A.
Earning first team honors on offense was senior tackle Breshonski Jones and athlete Jaishaun Doucet.
Doucet played quarterback, running back and was a return specialist for the Bulldogs this season.
On the defensive side of the ball, senior linebacker Tralon Thomas was named to the first team, as he compiled 105 tackles and two sacks.
Joining Thomas on first team defense was defensive back Martin Jason, who recorded 23 tackles and one interception.
Second team offensive honors went to Davondez Doucet, and Danthony Anderson, while Ronderkus Ben and Jones were named to the second team defense.
Pine Prairie finished another year at 3-7, but got their first ever district win over Port Barre in week eight.
The Panthers did not have any first team players, but had a number of second team and honorable mention selections.
Colby Leggett was named to the second team offense, while Ahmad Fontenot, Coryn Anderson, Gaten Chaddrick, J.J. Sims and Caleb Dupuis were all tabbed on the defensive side of the ball.
Honorable Mention players included Dylan Chappelle, Alex Causey, Colton Ortego, Clint Graser and Darnell Durgin.
Mamou High came into the season with a number of inexperienced players and it showed, as the Demons went 0-10.
However, Mamou had their share of second team and honorable mention selections for District 4-2A.
Second team honorees included Joab Perron, Shawn Malveaux, and Ronnie McBride. Perron was an offensive and defensive selection, while Malveaux and McBride made it on defense only.
Honorable Mention team members for the Demons included freshmen Devin Messer and Parker Granger along with Tyler Gallow.
