Lady Trojans cruise over Lady Eagles

As the basketball season rolls toward the district season, the Lady Trojans of Sacred Heart continued to rack up wins and gain momentum. They went to Plaucheville and took on the Lady Eagles of St. Joseph’s Academy. Sacred Heart earned a 61-48 victory in impressive fashion.
The Lady Trojans went up 16-12 in the opening period. Heather Johnson hit six points to begin the game, while Courtney Cloud and Natalie Earles each added three points of their own. On defense Catherine Poche and Heather Fontenot forced turnovers that led to SHHS points.
In the second period, the Lady Trojans out-scored the Lady Eagles 18-16. The quick bucket exchange was impressive on both sides of the ball, but what was much more impressive was the resilient effort of the local girls. Cloud and Gabbie Andrepont combined for 14 of the 18 points. Andrepont hit four buckets and finished her night with 12 points altogether.
The Lady Trojans held a 34-28 lead at the halfway point. While the momentum was split for the most part, the Lady Trojans were about to put the game out of reach.
Sacred Heart out-scored St. Joseph’s 12-7 in the third period and then 15-13 in the final period. The big swing in the third period came on the hot precision shooting of Poche, who hit three straight shots. She finished the night with eight points, but her presence was really felt on defense.
The final period saw Johnson bank back-to-back, three-point bombs. She led the SHHS girls with 14 points. Heather Fontenot helped with a pair of lay-ups in the game. She had a total of eight points and Cloud ended her night with eight points.
Sacred Heart will begin league play on January 14th. They will host North Central that night. On Monday, January 7th, the Lady Trojans will take on the Lady Bears of Church Point at Church Point High School.
