The Sacred Heart Trojans are battling tough competition and getting ready for District 5-1A competition. Their district is pretty tough and will be a series of hard contests especially with North Central and Pointe Coupee Central in the mix.
Recently, the Trojans took on two very tough opponents in Church Point and Evangel Christian Academy. The two 3A schools both defeated the Trojans, but it was the learning lessons and competition the SHHS boys needed the most.
The Eagles of ECA got by the Trojans by a score of 65-34. The Eagles battled back and forth with the local boys in the first period, but then moved out in front and took a 12-8 lead.
In the second period, the Eagles threw up 21 points and held the Trojans to just eight points. This barrage gave the Eagles a commanding lead as they went into halftime. Evangel was up 33-16.
The second half was more of the same, especially in the third period. The Eagles ripped 15 points with long distance three-point shots. When it was all said and done, Evangel had out scored Sacred Heart 23-6 in the third period.
With the game all but over, the Trojans could have sat back and let the clock just expire. Instead, they battled back and out scored the Eagles 12-9. Keaton Tate popped a three-point shot and finished the game with six points.
Sean Fontenot ended his night with six points also.
Sacred Heart took on the Bears of Church Point, also a Class 3A school like ECA. This time, the Trojans put up a much better fight, but still fell 75-62.
The two platoons battled hard in the first period. Church Point was stunned as the Trojans out scored them 20-15 in the frame. Seth Ship was big with six points and Sean Fontenot really set the pace with 10 points.
In the second frame, the Trojans were pushed back as the Bears put up 22 points to their 14 points. It was a turning point in the game as the Bears recovered from the Trojans first period onslaught. Mikey Laughlin helped the Trojans by banking eight points. Laughlin ended the night with 14 points. At the half, the Bears were up 37-34 and still stunned by what the smaller Class 1A school had done.
In the second half, the two schools still battled closely. Sacred Heart was out scored 19-14 in the third period. Church Point came out strong, but still found themselves in a fight.
As the fourth period began, the Trojans were down 56-48. They did not back down, they kept coming at the Bears. Ship hit another six points to help the SHHS final surge. Ship ended the night with 16 total. Even with the determined push, Sacred Heart could not catch the Bears.
Fontenot ended the Church Point win with a team high of 17 points.
The Trojans began league play this week and will host False River tomorrow night.
