Chataignier voters select Brasseaux as police chief

CHATAIGNIER — A successor to the late Paul Allen Jr. was elected late Saturday night.
Clint Brasseaux defeated McDaniel “Big Mac” Wilson for Chataignier Police Chief by claiming 65 percent of the vote by winning a total of 90 of the 139 total votes cast in the small Evangeline Parish village.
The unofficial turnout for the race from the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office was 54.5 percent.
“I want to thank everyone for their support,” Brasseaux said. “I promise to work hard and do the right thing. I appreciate everybody’s support. I feel blessed to be able to hold this position.”
Wilson was gracious in defeat and pledged to run again in 2020.
“I want to thank everyone who went out and voted,” Wilson said. “And I will try again in four years and keep on trying until I get in.”
Brasseaux will become the first new police chief that the village has had in nearly three decades. Allen Jr. served in that role for 28 years before passing away at the age of 62 in August of 2015. The village has been without a police chief in the almost seven months since his passing.
The 36-year-old Brasseaux is excited to bring his kind of leadership to his hometown.
“It is time for us to start to give back to the community,” Brasseaux said. “I was born and raised here. I know everybody and I believe that I will be able to serve everybody with respect. I plan to diffuse any situation with kindness and a friendly face.”
