This week, we take a look back at July 1952.
•74-year-old Jules Tate prepared to participate in the July 4, running of the Tournoi.
•Rita Gayle Fontenot, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chesley Fontenot of Vidrine, was crowned Miss Queen of July 4th.
•A farewell reception honoring Father Jules Speyrer was hosted prior to his leaving his post at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
•The Mamou Knights of Columbus hosted a dance at the Evangeline Club. Cost to attend was $1 per couple.
•Ville Platte Mayor Harvey LeBas was named chairman of the Evangeline Parish Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.
•Ville Platte High School named two new coaches, Gordon Bradshaw and William Parker.
•Natalie Landreneau, a Ville Platte native and teacher in Baton Rouge, left to begin one year of teaching abroad in Brighton, England.
•Ville Platte High School Principal J.D. “Prof” Lafleur attended the Louisiana Principal’s Association meeting to represent the parish at the Louisiana Conference on Education Administration.
•Glenn Hollier was named the new president of the Ville Platte Lions Club.
•The Crystal Cafe in Mamou offered turkey dinners every Sunday and Tuesday.
•Sale items at the Brunet Furniture Store included a four-piece poster bed set for $79.95, various floor lamps for $9.95 each, Apex washing machine for $79.95 and five-piece plastic dinette set for $89.95.
•Sale items at the J.B. Veillon Store included Mello Joy Coffee for 73 cents per pounds, three boxes of Jello for 25 cents, 3.5 ounce jar of shelled pecans for 37 cents and two large cans of Carnation milk for 29 cents.
•Sale items at G. Ardoin’s included a 25-pound bag of White Goose flour for $1.86, dressed fryers for 56 cents per pound and a 19-ounce bottle of Colgate water softener for 37 cents.
•Sale items at Ludeau’s Lumber Yard included house paint for 51 cents per quart or $4.40 per gallon and floor deck enamel for $1 per quart.
•Movies released in July 1952 included “The African Queen” starring Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, “Invitation” starring Van Johnson and Dorothy McGuire and “The Girl in White” starring June Allyson and Arthur Kennedy.
•Popular songs of July 1952 included “Blue Tango” by Leroy Anderson, “Here In My Heart” by Al Martino, “You Belong to Me” by Jo Stafford, “Half As Much” by Rosemary Clooney and “Kiss of Fire” by Georgia Gibbs.
