New trial date sought for Jacob Guillory Jr.

A motion for a new trial or to amend or vacate the present sentence against Jacob Guillory Jr. has been filed in the 13th Judicial District Court.

The motion filed by L. Clayton Burgess of Lafayette, counsel for Guillory, is based on material he received in the case in December 2007, which he said indicates testimony was manipulated and/or changed in this case. He said this new information reflects “Jacob Guillory Jr. is innocent and/or evidence may have been hidden, changed and/or tampered with.” The motion goes on to state an injustice was done to Guillory due to some evidence that was not turned over to the defense before the trial and the evidence could have changed the verdict or the judgement in this case.

The case involves the death of Caffery Scott, who was shot on a rural road in the parish July 20, 1985. Guillory and Melissa Charlie were initially charged with second-degree murder in this case, and Guillory was the only one tried by the court, according to information in the motion. Guillory was sentenced to life in prison without the benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence.
