The Ville Platte City Council heard from two Y.O.U. graduates at its special meeting Tuesday, March 18, and received a plaque in honor of the council’s support of the program.

Director of the Y.O.U. program, Diana Johnson, introduced other program personnel, including Georgianna Wilson, Horace Johnson, Sharon Fontenot, Pauline Toussaint and Virginia Freeman. Johnson also introduced two recent graduates of the program, which gives 15-year-old students an opportunity to experience life in a working environment.

The two graduates, Haley Brown and Dustin Johnson, presented the council with a plaque thanking the council for supporting the program for the last few years. Both students said their experiences in the program were invaluable to them and they learned a great deal about what life will be like after school.

Mayor Bill Jeanmard thanked the students for the plaque and for their hard work, and he also thanked those individuals working in the program for another great year for Y.O.U.

In other business, the council:

•Approved a liquor permit for St. Joseph Catholic Church, which will be holding a zydeco dance.

•Approved a liquor permit for Incredible Salads, Steaks and Seafood.

•Agreed to advertise a land swap, in which the city will acquire a piece of land along Railroad Street directly behind the Ville Platte Police Department.

•Appointed six people to the museum commission, which was recently created by the Ville Platte City Council to oversee the operation of museums in the city. The appointees were Dr. Jerry Veillon, Donna Veillon, Lynn Landreneau, Leonard Glenn Fontenot, Gary Landreneau and JD Soileau.

•Discussed the possible purchase of a new server system for city hall. Jeanmard said the system would cost approximately $10,000. The old system, according to Jeanmard, is having problems with stability when installing new programs. The purchase will be discussed further at the council’s next meeting.
