Former Sacred Heart High school standout, Kaleb Jon Fontenot, has racked up a pretty successful season so far on the baseball diamond for the McNeese Cowboys. As of Thursday, Fontenot has accumulated an overall record of 7-3 in 14 appearances on the hill for the Pokes in 2015. The junior right hander has thrown 86 and two thirds innings and holds an ERA of 3.12. Fontenot has struck out 88 and walked 26, while holding opponents to a .255 batting average. He has also recorded a complete game shutout against Grambling last Friday.
Against Grambling, Fontenot retired 24 of the 30 batters he faced, including a stretch of 12 consecutive outs in his nine innings of work. He allowed five hits and compiled a streak of nine consecutive strikeouts in the first three frames.
The junior right-hander tied a career-high strikeout mark with nine K’s on the night. “Kaleb was fantastic and did a great job for us on the mound tonight,” said head coach Justin Hill. “It was his game and he threw the ball well. It was definitely the story of the game.”
Fontenot took to the hill on Thursday against the University of Central Arkansas. The Cowboy hurler turned in another quality start with six innings pitched and three runs allowed despite scattering seven hits and a walk. He fanned seven batters in the process. However, Fontenot did not record the decision, as the Bears scored two runs in the eighth inning to take the one run win. The Pokes finished out the regular season yesterday and will compete in the Southland Conference tournament starting on Wednesday. Therefore, Fontenot’s next outing is yet to be determined. Fontenot is the son of John and Bridgette Fontenot.
