Heritage Manor News: Food programs in activities

There are many reasons why the elderly are at risk for weight loss, decreased appetite, illness, dental problems, cognitive decline and decline in the sense of smell and taste. Incorporating food programs in activities encourages residents to share recipes, reminisce and exchange food ideas. We have a monthly food committee meeting set up as an activity with our dietary manager that gives our residents the opportunity to voice their preferences in meal service. We also have our monthly resident council meeting that allows the residents to choose a meal of the month. Here they bring up different ideas and vote on the meal chosen. Other activities with food involved include happy hour, snack toss, ice cream party, pizza party, cookie bake and birthday party. We also do monthly cookouts, such as the VFW barbecue and picnics in the park.
Activities this week include Bible study with Thomas Toler, Come Lord Jesus group, pokeno, manicures, in-room visits, group exercise, resident council meeting, jingo, bingo sponsored by Ardoin’s Funeral Home, snow cones, hot dollar, social reading and mass.

The birthday party for residents in the dementia unit will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 15, in the dementia unit’s dining room.
