Heritage Manor News: Signs and symptoms of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is also known as brittle bone disease. As bones become less dense with age, they become weakened and are more likely to break. A normal bone looks like a sponge. When the bone becomes less dense and more porous, the holes in the bone become larger. Osteoporosis is a leading disease of bone breaking down and affects more than 10 million people in the United States alone. It primarily affects postmenopausal women older than the age of 55, but can also affect men older than 70. Causes of this disease include hormone deficiency, long-term use of steroids, chronic hyperthyroidism, Vitamin D deficiency and leukemia. Some risk factors include family history, dementia, recurrent falls, smoking, petite frame, and low body weight. Some early signs may include bent posture, gradual loss of height, low back pain and Vitamin D deficiency.
