Heritage Manor News: Traditions and resolutions from around the globe

(Editor’s Note: The following article was submitted by Patricia Duplechin, resident activity director at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Ville Platte. This column runs every Sunday in The Gazette.)
Have you ever made or know someone who has made a resolution for the New Year? It is said that if a person shares a resolution with another person, they are more likely to succeed. In Greece, an onion is hung on the door on New Year’s Eve as a symbol of renewal and rebirth. In Turkey, salt is sprinkled on the doorsteps of homes at midnight. This is said to bring peace and abundance. In Russia, wishes are written, burned and put in a champagne glass that they must drink before the stroke of midnight. Italians wear red underwear, which is said to bring love, good luck and prosperity. In Thailand, people throw buckets of water on each other. What is your tradition or resolution? Make it interesting, fun and, of course, a challenge.
Activities this week include bible study, exercise, Come Lord Jesus group, manicures, bingo sponsored by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, parachute fun, happy hour, resident birthday party, VFW barbecue, rosary and mass.
