The Mamou Police Department, with assistance from the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office, have arrested a suspect in connection to Monday’s ATM theft at Citizens Bank in Mamou, and the shooting at police that occurred afterwards.
According to a press release by Mamou Police Chief Robert McGee, the Mamou Police Department received a call on Monday morning at 3:45 a.m. from the Savoy Hospital Emergency Room. The call was in reference to Citizens Bank located at 609 Poinciana Avenue being robbed by a suspect using a backhoe.
MPD officer Ben Bordelon arrived at the scene at 3:47 a.m. and was quickly informed by a Savoy Hospital security guard that the back hoe had just turned down Cherry Street. Bordelon proceeded to Cherry Street and soon spotted the backhoe which was now at the intersection of Cherry and Country Lane.
The suspect driving the backhoe apparently spotted Bordelon and began firing rounds at the squad car.
Police Chief McGee was called and arrived on the scene at 3:52 a.m. and located the backhoe, now abandoned, on Country Lane and Celestine Street. A perimeter was set and assistance was called in and EPSO and Louisiana State Police arrived on the scene shortly after.
The scene was cleared from danger and the investigation started as shell casings belonging to AR 15 Assault Rifle was found at the intersection of Cherry and Country Lane. A total of 12 casings were found.
The State Crime Lab was contacted and gathered all possible evidence. As the lab were processing the scene, MPD began receiving tips on possible subjects that may have been involved in the robbery and shooting. Those tips led to the arrest, by EPSO, of Dejuan Guillory who was initially arrested for Theft of a Backhoe and bond was set at $75,000.
MPD continued its investigation on Tuesday by gathering additional information from tips the department was continuing to receive. Investigators talked to Guillory once more and at around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Guillory was charged with Attempted Murder when shots were fired at a officer, Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property over $150,000.00, Criminal Damage to Property over $800.00, Criminal Damage to Property – $400.00 and Felony Theft  - $100,000.00.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the multiples drive-up lanes at the bank remained fenced off.
Even with a suspect in custody, Chief McGee is asking if anyone else has additional information please contact the MPD at (337) 468-5221 or EPSO at (337) 363-2161. All calls will remain anonymous.
