The Sacred Heart Lady Trojans traveled to Baton Rouge on Thursday hoping to upset the Lady Chargers of Madison Prep and score a first round playoff win. The Lady Trojans have not gone beyond the bi-district round of the playoffs in some time.
Sacred Heart took to the hardwood against Madison Prep in hopes of reversing that trend, but could not overcome the Lady Charger athleticism and fell 65-33.
As in any road playoff game, the visiting team needs to get off to a fast start in order to take away the home court advantage. The Lady Trojans were not able to accomplish that task in the opening period. Madison Prep established a defensive presence early in the game, holding Sacred Heart to only five points in the first quarter.
The Lady Chargers quickly gained the momentum offensively and led the Lady Trojans 11-5 as the first period came to a close.
Both offensively and defensively, the second quarter was not kind to Sacred Heart. Madison Prep continued to put tremendous pressure on the Lady Trojans from both sides of the floor.
The Lady Chargers widened their advantage by knocking in 24 second period points. Sacred Heart could only manage single digits once again, as Madison Prep took a 35-12 lead into the locker room.
Neither team was able to manage any offensive production in the third quarter. The Lady Trojans matched their scoring output from the second quarter and netted seven points in the third stanza.
The Lady Chargers could not do any better, only scoring five third period points. However, Madison Prep still controlled the game at the end of three quarters of play 40-19.
The Lady Trojans finally managed some offensive production in the fourth quarter. Three-point buckets by Erin Fontenot and Kara Aguillard propelled Sacred Heart to a 14-point performance. It proved to be too little too late, as the Lady Chargers added 25 points of their own to close out the win.
Sacred Heart was led offensively by Hannah Lemoine, who netted eight points. Gabbie Andrepont hauled down a total of 13 rebounds. Andrepont and Natalie Earles each recorded two steals. The Lady Trojans finish the year with an overall record of 13-12 and a district 5-1A runner-up title.
