Trojans winning momentum gives them the edge against Panthers

They say that momentum is hard to slow down once it gets going. If that is the case, then the Sacred Heart Trojans should have a big edge tonight when they travel to Pine Prairie to meet the Panthers (2-2). Sacred Heart (1-2) cruised by Mamou last week by a score of 40-0, while Pine Prairie fell short to Vinton.
Both teams are set to begin district play next week and both teams need to collect the power points off of this game. Sacred Heart would really benefit from a win, getting 10 points for the win plus points for playing a Class 3A school. The Panthers would like to get the 10 points for the win and also the possible points that could come with a successful Sacred Heart team. Either way you look at it, these teams need to win.
The Trojans scored 40 points last week and possibly could have put up more against Mamou. Their revamped offense came out in a semi-spread look with a shotgun. That new and improved set helped senior Wesley Fontenot flourish and dice up the Mamou defense for over 100 yards. With the opened up set, the Trojans should do well. The new look allows Fontenot to utilize all the weapons that SHHS has.
The Trojans will have to compete against a PPHS team that has also improved. The Panthers put good drives together last week against the VHS Lions, but could not produce the points they needed to get back in the game.
Quarterback Cade Vidrine’s ability to find Dylan Doucet and Douglas Fontenot has improved week after week. The duo have the ability to score at any time and from any where on the field. It was Fontenot that scored the lone touchdown against the Trojans in the Evangeline Parish Jamboree. He is also the guy that seems to get the rest of the offense going.
The two teams have both struggled on defense. Sacred Heart showed some improvement last week against a Mamou offense that was a bit sluggish to say the least.
Pine Prairie’s defense worked hard and made Vinton struggle at times. The Panthers have to continue to improve on defense if they want a chance at getting their third win of the season.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. tonight in Pine Prairie.
