Magnolia Garden Club presents awards
The Garden of the Month and Civic Pride Award of Merit for the month of September were selected by a committee from the Magnolia Garden Club. The recipient of the Garden of the Month honor was the home of James and Penny Berthelot, and the Civic Pride award was presented to the Best Western of Ville Platte on East Main Street. The Berthelot residence, first photo, features tall crepe myrtles at each corner of the house and along the driveway. Nandinas, boxwoods and a hedge with blue plumbago in honor of Penny’s late mother nestle up to the house’s foundation. Agapanthus and blue phlox mark the entrance. The attraction for butterflies are the yellow and gold lantanas sprawling over the liriope at the edge of the bed. Two large black swans in the center of the bed can be seen from the front window of the home, and colorful flowers surround the mailbox. At the Best Western, next two photos, large live oak trees overshadow crepe myrtles and boxwoods as the visitor comes up the driveway. A large bed marks the entrance, and a huge sago palm is featured in the center of the bed. It is surrounded by large hedges with liriope marking the perimeter. The hotel and swimming pool are anchored by boxwoods. The side driveway has crepe myrtles and tall pampas grass marking the colorful periwinkles.
