4-H goes to the Cotton Festival

Parish 4-H students compete at this year’s Cotton Pickin’ Pet Show and Cotton Food Fest

The 2017 Louisiana Cotton Festival got off to a great start with Cotton Pickin Pet Show and the Cotton Food Fest held Wednesday, October 11 at the Civic Center. This contest gives 4-H Members their first opportunity to enter a 4-H contest and include their own pets with their talents, beauty, and uniqueness. For many years, Evangeline Bank has partnered with the AgCenter to judge the pet show. The rules for the pet show allow dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and many other small animals.
In the Cat division, first place in Best Groomed Category went to Beau Fontenot, Bayou Chicot Elementary 7th grade. In the Most Obedient Cat Category, first place went to Grace
Bordelon, Bayou Chicot Elementary 7th grade. The Best Dressed Cat 1st place award went to Abigail Hazleton, Pine Prairie 4th grade. With the Best Costumed Pair, first place went to Alexis Bordelon, Bayou Chicot 5th grade.
In the Rabbit Division, in the shortest ears category with a first place was Nathanael Miller, Sacred Heart 6th grade. In the Longest Ears category, first place went to Peyton Guillory, Sacred Heart 6th grade. With a first place in the Best Groomed Category was Maci Campbell, Bayou Chicot 6th grade. In the Softest Fur category 1st place was awarded to Michael Dischler, Bayou Chicot 4th grade.
In the Bird/Fowl Category Samuel Richardson, Sacred Heart 5th grade took first place with the
Smallest Bird. In the Longest Beak category, first place went to Caroline Richardson, Sacred Heart 5th grade. With the Most Unusual Bird, Caroline Richardson, Sacred Heart 5th grade won first place. In the Most Colorful Bird category, first place went to Harley Soileau, Chatagnier 6th grade.
In the Any Other Pet Division, the Smallest Pet
Category first place winner was awarded to Connor Duplechin, Mamou 5th grade. In the Most Colorful Category first place was awarded to Landon Hicks, Vidrine 6th grade. With a first place in the Most Unusual Category was Connor Duplechin, Mamou 5th grade. The Largest pet
Category in the pet show was won by Landon Hicks, Vidrine 6th grade.
In the Dog Division, in the Medium/Large Category, the first place winner in the Best Costumed Pair went to Haylee Dupre, Sacred Heart 5th grade. In the Most Naturally Colorful category the first place winner was Jackson Soileau, Sacred Heart 5th grade. The 4-H Member with the Best Trick from their dog was Madison Manuel, Sacred Heart 7th grade. In the Best Groomed category, first place went to Jace Ortego, Sacred Heart 5th grade.
In the Dog Division, in the Small Dog Category, the first place winner with the Best Costumed Pair was Lilly Blankenship, Bayou Chicot 7th grade. With the Most Naturally Colorful pet was Caitlyn Wade, Mamou 5th grade. The entry with the Best Trick went Garrett Marcantel, Bayou Chicot 5th grade. With the pet with the Prettiest Coat was Caden Askey, Bayou Chicot 5th grade.
In The Dog Division, in Puppy Category, the first place winner with the Best Costumed Pair was Maci Campbell, Bayou Chicot 6th grade. With the Most Naturally Colorful Puppy, Most Loveable Puppy, and the Puppy with Prettiest Eyes the 1st place winner was Zavi Graser, Bayou Chicot 4th grade. Special Thanks go out to the ladies at Evangeline Bank that so graciously volunteer each year to run the entire pet show. These include Beth Jones, Susan Verrette, Heidi Soileau, Ashley Clark, Belinda Soileau, and Wendy Fontenot.
In the Cookery Contest, 50 dishes were entered in the Ground Beef, Sugar, Egg, and Seafood Cookery Contests.
Parish Winners in the Beef Cookery were: Quick and Easy Main Dish: Lindsey Ardoin, Pine Prairie 10th Grade, with Taco Soup; and One Dish Meal: Julia Elnagger, Bayou Chicot 4th Grade, with Ground Beef Biscuit Casserole. Ten dishes were entered in this contest.
Seafood Parish Winner were: Crab: Benjamin Fontenot, Sacred Heart 8th Grade, with Cajun Crab Dip; Shrimp: Mia Jones, Sacred Heart 6th Grade, with Shrimp Sushi; Crawfish: Lane Perry, Sacred Heart 8th Grade, Stewed Catfish. There were twenty-one dishes entered in this contest.
Sugar Division Winners were: Baked: John Cortez, WW Stewart 4th Grade with Sopapilla Cheesecake; Non-Baked: Aubrey Chapman, Sacred Heart 5th Grade with Peanut Butter Fudge. There were thirty-four dishes in this contest.
Egg Cookery Winners included: Appetizer: Katherine Fontenot, Sacred Heart 5th Grade with Crawfish Deviled
Eggs; Main Dish: Caroline Garrett, Sacred Heart 4th Grade with Crawfish Quiche; Dessert: Deanna Blankenship, James Stephens Montessori 5th with Pavlova Cookies. There were eighteen dishes in this contest.
