VILLE PLATTE -- Coming into Friday night’s doubleheader games against the Church Point Bears and the Lady Bears, the Ville Platte Bulldogs and the Lady Bulldogs were needing wins to try and continue their domination in District 5-3A.
The Lady Bulldogs played their part by running past the Lady Bears 49-29 to remain undefeated in league play at 7-0.
The Bulldogs did not disappoint either, as they took a 60-43 win over the Bears to stay within one game of district front-runner Northwest and run their league record to 4-1.
In the early game, the Lady Bulldogs showed why they have dominated the district the last few years.
Using a tenacious defense and a purposeful inside-out game, Ville Platte was able to take a 16-4 advantage as the first quarter came to a close.
In the quarter, Jakiah Thomas and Tyreonna Doucet combined for 10 of those first 16 points of the game.
The second quarter was not as productive offensively for Ville Platte, but the defense continued to thrive, as the Lady Bulldogs widened the lead to 27-8 heading into halftime.
The final two quarters saw Church Point try to close the gap, only being outscored 22-20. But Ville Platte had already done the necessary damage in the first half.
Doucet had 12 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs, while Thomas chipped in 10 points.
Ville Platte improves to 21-7 on the year.
The matinee game proved to be a solid effort for the Bulldogs. Ville Platte took control early, outpacing Church Point 19-13 in the first quarter behind a trio of three-point baskets.
The Bulldogs stretched that lead to six, 35-25, by the time the buzzer had sounded for the end of the first half.
But, it was the third quarter that gave Ville Platte the breathing room it needed, as the Bulldogs were five points better, 13-8, in the period.
A 12-10 advantage in the final quarter sealed the win for Ville Platte.
Tyran Jones popped the nets for 13 points to lead the Bulldogs, as Martin Jason and Jamal Byers each added 10 points.
With the win, Ville Platte is now 18-6 on the season.
