Heritage Manor News: Celebrating President’s Day

Up until 1968, the birth anniversaries of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington were celebrated in various states as holidays on February 12, and February 22. On June 28, 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Monday Holiday Law. This law established Monday observances of many holidays, such as Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day and Veterans’ Day, regardless of when the traditional dates were. The new law went into effect in January 1971. Veteran’s Day has since reverted to its traditional date of November 11. The third Monday in February was chosen as President’s Day to honor all former U.S. presidents.

This coming Thursday, our meal of the month chosen by residents at the monthly resident council meeting is barbecue pork ribs, cornbread dressing, potato salad, mustard greens, pineapple cake and root beer.
We are looking forward to our Mardi Gras celebration with our friends at Savoy Care Center in Mamou. Our residents enjoy this event and are working hard on their costumes in arts and crafts. If you have any old Mardi Gras costumes that you no longer use and want to donate, please call or come by. We are always happy to receive donations for our residents.
Activities this week include Come Lord Jesus group, bingo sponsored by the Ville Platte Rotary Club, pokeno, manicures, happy hour, horseshoes, hot dollar, ball toss, mass by Sacred Heart, exercise, music and snack toss.
Many thanks to all who purchased suckers for our Valentine’s Day event. It was a great success. All proceeds will go to our outings in the near future.
