MAMOU -- It is a new season for Mamou High and with that comes renewed optimism that this will be the year that the Demons get back on in the win column.
Mamou will begin the quest for their first win in over three years tomorrow night, as they travel to Oberlin to take on the Tigers.
“Getting that first win will definitely go along way to giving us the confidence we need for the rest of the season,” stated Mamou head coach Brian Brumfield. “I just hope with all the weather that we can get the game in. We really want to play this week. I feel that Oberlin is a team that we can compete with.”
Brumfield is desperate to keep up the momentum that his team received from their performance in the jamboree last Friday night. Mamou lost to Ville Platte 13-6, but according to Brumfield, the Demons had chances to take home the win.
“I was very pleased with our effort against Ville Platte,” said Brumfield. “We played with a ton of energy. With us only having five seniors and needing to rely on juniors and sophomores, I thought we played well. If we do not give up the big pass plays and take advantage of their first turnover, this would have been a different game. I am super excited about the season and what it holds for us.”
Still, Brumfield knows that his team has some work to do before they become a perfect team.
“Right now, a lot of our offense still has not been installed because we did not get our new coaches on staff until this summer,” stated Brumfield. “For example, our passing game is not where it needs to be at this time. But, that is going to come with each week that we play. Also, our linebacker play needs to improve. We have two new guys at that position. As they play more, they will only get better.”
Brumfield feels that his team will need to be ready to play come tomorrow night against Oberlin.
“They are big and physical,” commented Brumfield. “They run the Wing-T really well. We are going to have to execute our assignments on defense. Hopefully the field conditions are going to be good enough for us to be able to throw the ball a little.”
