This week, we take a look back at February 1974.
• Belinda Pelloquin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.. Jimmie Pelloquin of Basile, was crowned the 1974 Evangeline Parish Farm Bureau Queen. First runner-up was Wanda Gayle Fusilier of Vidrine, and second runner-up was Carla Fruge of Basile.
• Robert “Rusty” Dupre of Ville Platte won the Elanco Treflan Soybean Champions Tour of the Orient for winning the 1973 Louisiana 5 Acre Soybean Recognition program.
• The dedication of the 124-bed, $3.5 million Ville Platte General Hospital was scheduled for early March. Cecil Colligan was the hospital administrator.
•Berk Veillion, director of the Evangeline Parish Mental Health Committee, and Hugh Bordelon, chairman of the Acadiana Health Planning Council, participated in an interagency forum sponsored by the AHPC.
• Roland Smith of Ville Platte was elected a director of the Louisiana Braham Association at the organization’s annual meeting in Baton Rouge.
• Mrs. W.J. Miller of Pine Prairie was named chairman of the Cystic Fibrosis Spring Special Events Campaign to fight children’s lung diseases.
• Mrs. Sharon Fontenot directed a record book workshop for fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade students at Sacred Heart Elementary School.
• The starting five at Vidrine High School selected for the All District Team were Phoebe Fontenot, Judy Jack, Vicky Rider, Carla Fuselier and Shelia Deville. Rider was also selected Outstanding Player.
• Mrs. Bob W. Beauregard was hostess for the Ville Platte Fire Department Auxiliary monthly meeting.
• Mrs. Paul LeDoux hosted the monthly meeting of Epsilon Sigma.
• Debra Ann Soileau, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Soileau, married James David Fontenot, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oswald J. Fontenot of Ville Platte at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ville Platte.
• Evangeline Parish 4-H officers elected to serve for the year were: Ricky Landreneau, president, Evangeline Academy; Becky Deshotel, vice president, Vidrine; Tina Fontenot, secretary, Sacred Heart; Johanna Fontenot, treasurer, Sacred Heart; and Donald Deville, reporter, Ville Platte.
• Bill Hoffpauir won Reserve Champion at the parish livestock show with his cross-bred Charlais steer.
• Discussions on re-appointment, change in school hours, additional cost-of-living raise for bus drivers and a report on the constitutional revisions highlighted a meeting of the Evangeline Parish School Board meeting.
