Trooper presents drug prevention program at Vidrine Elementary
Trooper Stephen Hammons led an interactive drug and alcohol awareness program at the Vidrine Elementary School auditorium Thursday afternoon, October 24.
Hammons, Troop I State Police public information officer, during an interview just before his program began, said his appearance coincides with “Red Ribbon Week,” October 21 through 25. People have been wearing red ribbons during that week in observance of the fight against drug abuse since 1985.
Hammons said the focus of his presentation is to make young people aware of realistic approaches to instances of drug and alcohol abuse. He said youngsters in the age group of those in his audience at the elementary school don’t often get the chance to have one-on-one interaction with law enforcement on the subject.
The goal is to educate children early so as they grow older, they will be more capable of making responsible decisions. Hammons said as he has presented the drug and alcohol abuse programs, he has been surprised about the knowledge the young children have of narcotics. “They know things even as a teen I was not aware of,” he said.
Hammons presents programs tailored to the interests of any organization on any law enforcement related topic.
